CORAL : REKINDLING VENUS

“As close as most of us are going to get to feeling like we’re in a James Cameron submersible, ‘Coral’ is immersive cinema at its most spectacular”.

Kenneth Turan, LA Times

“Imagine global co-operation for a global problem. Imagine corals as the barometer of climate change. Imagine we are the pivot point. Imagine Rekindling Venus.

My intent is to leave the audience with a sense of wonder for the complexity of the coral community and a deep-felt longing to see it survive.”

Lynette Wallworth

In 2012 in line with the rare astronomical event, the Transit of Venus, Wallworth released her fulldome film Coral in 25 cities around the world in a single week. The goal was to reference a moment of global co-operation in the 1700’s when the scientific community collaborated in an unprecedented way to observe the Transit of Venus.

CORAL: Rekindling Venus Wallworth’s fulldome film is an extraordinary journey into the mysterious realms of fluorescent coral reefs, bioluminescent sea creatures and rare marine life. It reveals a complex community of extraordinary creatures struggling to survive the increasing threat climate change.

Made specifically for full dome digital planetariums, Coral premiered as part of the London Cultural Olympiad and the World Science Festival NYC. It is accompanied by incredible soundtrack with music from Max Richter, Fennesz Sakamoto, Gurrumul, Antony and the Johnsons and Tanya Tagaq Gillis.

RISE by Antony and the Johnsons

“… audible gasps filled the room, audience members clasped their hands to their chests and a few left the planetarium in tears.”

Mera McGrew, The Huffington Post

“We anticipated a cumulative audience of about 7,000 over the two weeks; instead, we reached more than 22,000 visitors.  The Museum finds the artistic and educational value of Coral: Rekindling Venus to be of the highest caliber;  …a great, popular experience for audiences.”

Ruth Cohen, American Museum of Natural History

“…received rave reviews and rapidly became one of the “must see” screening events of the 2013 festival.  …a truly inspired transmedia presentation that is surely destined to continue to grow and influence audiences to become aware of the planet’s endangered coral reefs.”

Shari Frilot, Senior Programmer, Sundance Film Festival & New Frontier at Sundance

Rekindling Venus : In Plain Sight

Rekindling Venus: In Plain Sight - Augmented Reality App was developed by Lynette Wallworth as the companion piece to Coral: Rekindling Venus. The app allows users to connect to the worlds reefs via a 2D image in their own home.

A set of seven extraordinary poster images of coral specimens are activated by the Augmented Reality app downloadable onto mobile phones.

The posters open a virtual porthole to coral reefs including a data feed to current coral hotspots around the world
